Active Membership Information How to maintain an "Active" membership in the Ohio Gamma Chapter of Tau Beta Pi:
During the initiation process I usually ask people how many hours of participation is fair to expect from our members. To this question I usually get a reply of 10 hours per quarter to 10 hours per week. We have noticed that many members are confused as to how much activity we would like from you after initiation. This is what we ask of our members. This is in no way a limit to what you can do. There will be several additional activities for you to help with throughout the quarter if you have time. Feel free to give us any comments or suggestions at tbp@osu.edu.
- Volunteer to be a tutor or mentor every quarter and, if assigned, carry out the duties of a tutor in our tutor room or the duties of a mentor as described by the philanthropy chair.
- Perform at least one approved service project every quarter. This usually will be organized by the philanthropy chair and will require about 4 hours of your time.
- Attend all "mandatory" Tau Beta Pi meetings. These will be indicated to all members in the first two weeks of the quarter and will include, but not be limited to:
- Election meeting to vote on new candidates (2 per year)
- Election meeting for new chapter officers (1 per year)
- Constitution ratification meeting (1 per year)
- Attend at least one Tau Beta Pi general meeting per quarter. (Usually 2-3 per quarter)
If you cannot fulfill any of these requirements, inform us at tbp@osu.edu as soon as you know that there is a conflict (try to give a 48 hour notice). We may be able to reschedule or make special alterations for special cases. If you are planning on being out of the area for the quarter (co-op, intern, study abroad...), let us know before you leave. You will be considered active by default.
Meeting all of the above requirements for two quarters in a row will make you an "active" member. Summer quarter is a freebie. No activity is required during the summer quarter since most of us are not on campus. The main benefit of being an active member is pure pride in knowing you are serving your chapter and alma mater. More benefits are listed below.
As a matter of records, an attendance sheet will be present at all Tau Beta Pi functions. If you do not get signed up on an attendance sheet, you will not be counted as attending that function so be sure to get signed up at all functions that you attend.
Benefits of being active in Tau Beta Pi:
- Personal Pride. Tau Beta Pi is not resume fodder. You joined to be recognized for your ability and character. This includes service to your chapter, school, and community. "The rating of people on the degree of unselfish activity manifested, is intended to indicate that Tau Beta Pi believes that none can become worthy engineers without the welfare of associates, organizations, and the community at heart. It is furthermore expected that they display willingness to aid and assist in worthy causes by their actual campus record."--from The Eligibility Code adopted at the 1926 Tau Beta Pi Convention.
- Eligibility for TBP scholarships, fellowships, and rewards
- Development of Leadership and Inter-Personal Skills
- Networking with Faculty, Administration, and Corporations
- Experience working and socializing with students in other engineering disciplines
- Discounts on chapter activities
- Only active members get to wear stoles over their robes at graduation
- Resume development. This is not the main reason to join TBP, but it is a benefit
- Inclusion in some chapter projects such as resume books
